We have formed the Committee of Katz for New York
to support Councilwoman Melinda Katz's campaign to become the next New York City Comptroller.
Melinda is uniquely qualified for the office by virtue of her education, training, experience
and practical knowledge of New York City Government. Melinda Katz is a native New Yorker,
born and raised in Queens. She is a product of the city's public schools. She earned her BA from
the University of Massachusetts and her law degree from St. John's University School of Law.
After law school, Melinda worked at Weil, Gotshal and Manges in its Business and Security
Litigation Department. At the age of 28, she was elected to the New York State Assembly,
representing over 150,000 constituents in 28th Assembly District. During her tenure as an Assemblywoman,
she served as Chair of the Sub-Committee on Urban Health. Among her legislative achievements, she authored
16 bills, including the Kendall Law which assisted the prosecution of child abusers, co-sponsored numerous
bills dealing with protecting children from abuse, increasing access to healthcare for women, and creating
jobs by streamlining the government bureaucracy, and reviewed and voted on the annual New York State Budget
(which is over $100 billion today). As Chair of the City Council's Land Use Committee for the past
6 years, one of Melinda’s key goals has been to fuel the economic resurgence of our city while assuring that
New York's communities survive and prosper. As the next Comptroller, she will work to maintain the healthy
economic trend and to move the city forward in providing accessible housing, quality schools and a prosperous
business climate. The Comptroller has the resources and tools available to achieve these goals, and Melinda
will make sure they are used effectively.
We believe in New York, and we believe that it can be even greater than it is today. Term limits
will create a city government with new leadership in both the executive and legislative branches.
Experience and consistency are vital to the city's ability to continue to progress. Melinda Katz,
with her experience in the private sector, state government and, for eight years, city government
can provide that consistency. That is why we support her.
Please join us in supporting Melinda Katz's campaign for Comptroller. She has what it takes to be
not only a great Comptroller but also a great citywide leader.
